Genshin Impact has yet another new upcoming competitor in the open-world, free-to-play JRPG business, Wuthering Waves.

Chinese developer Kuro Game announced on May 26, 2022, its brand new project, Wuthering Waves, an open-world JRPG with frenetic action gameplay coming to Mobile platforms. Several teaser trailers were published and can be found further below.

Kuro Game Promises High-Speed Action and Deep Storyline in Wuthering Waves

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Wuthering Waves will aim to offer much more spatial freedom to players when compared to its rivals. Most notably, the game's playable characters all have access to parkour-like movements. This allows them to run up walls vertically and access heightened locations much faster than with a typical climbing mechanic often present in open-world games. The game also has a glider-like mechanic to help you explore its various landscapes.

Moreover, Kuro Game also stated Wuthering Waves will have a particularly rich story, and already revealed the faces of several characters. Kuro Game is the developer of another mobile action JRPG: Punishing Gray Raven, known for featuring a particularly dark story, so we could expect something similar from Wuthering Waves.

Punishing Gray Raven was first released on December 5, 2019, in China, on December 4, 2020, in Japan, and got a global version on July 16, 2021. Punishing Gray Raven is also known for its android characters with distinct mechanical parts or doll joints included in their character design.

Meet Some of the Cast Teased in Gameplay Trailers

Furthermore, Kuro Game published several trailers showing the game in action. Personally speaking, I'd say it's way too early to judge whether Wuthering Waves will be a strong contender in the JRPG open-world business or not, but I'll definitely keep an eye on it. There are many other open-world JRPGs in development, most notably Bandai Namco's anime MMORPG Blue Protocol, and Perfect World's Tower of Fantasy.

Kuro Game did not announce a release date estimate for Wuthering Waves yet. The game is in its early phases of development so don't expect to see it released anytime soon.
