Why Genshin Impact Players Are Unhappy with Baal, Beidou, And Electro

Here's why some players believe The Raiden Shogun and the Electro characters of Genshin Impact need a buff.

September 3, 2021

Genshin Impact Version 2.1 added the Raiden Shogun (Baal) and Kujou Sara, the first two new Electro characters since the game launched on September 28, 2020, however, a certain amount of players are unhappy with the state of things.

Baal and Beidou’s Elemental Bursts don’t affect each other

Basically, Baal is a character all based around Energy Recharge and Elemental Burst / Q. By triggering the Elemental Burst of other characters, you charge Raiden”s special Resolve Stacks. Once full, you’ll unleash a much more powerful Q with Raiden.

Then, it gets a bit complicated. The Raiden Shogun’s attacks during her Q are considered as Normal Attack in terms of its movement type, but the DMG dealt is considered Elemental Burst DMG. Meaning during her Q, Raiden can still trigger effects triggered with Normal Attacks. Such as the sword rain attacks of Xingqiu’s Elemental Burst. And it should work with Beidou’s Q too, but it doesn’t. miHoYo hasn’t commented yet on the matter. We don’t know if it is a bug or intended.

Some players were planing to make party setups using Raiden and Beidou, to trigger the Electro Resonance party bonus. Beidou was obtainable for free in 2.0 too. So many f2p players who saved Primogems for months for Raiden wanted to do that team comp. Turns out said team comp doesn’t work.

Genshin Impact needs an Electro characters buff

Next, there’s also how Electro as a whole is often considered the weakest Element. It’s noticeable how Keqing, even with very good Artifacts substats, will end up being a weaker DPS dealer than other 5-star DPS characters. This is mainly due to the fact that Electro Elemental Reactions are lacking compared to the other Elements’ Reactions.

Back in April 2021, miHoYo announced that it would buff Elemental Reactions for Electro at some point. It did happen with Version 1.6, which buffed “damage caused by major reactions (i.e. Electro-Charged, Superconduct, Overloaded, Swirl, and Shatter) when a character reaches Level 60 or above”. The DMG Bonus provided by Elemental Mastery was also buffed for all reactions. But it’s still not enough, and the Electro element itself was not directly buffed.

Furthermore, it’s important to note buffing the Elemental Reactions for Electro wouldn’t truly change things much for Raiden. In the first place, she’s not a character based on triggering Reactions. An Electro buff benefiting Raiden and all Electro characters would be something akin to buffing the Electro Resonance bonus for example.

miHoYo might end up buffing Baal and Electro just like Zhongli and Geo characters

Some Genshin players also started #FixBaal and #BuffElectro tags on Twitter. (Beware, the BuffRaiden tag corresponds to Mortal Kombat‘s Raiden, not Genshin Impact‘s.) These aren’t getting particular traction now but might start racking up if more and more players grow dissatisfied. If a considerable amount of players in China and the rest of the world complain, miHoYo might end up buffing Baal like with Zhongli.

Last but not least, I’d personally add that while it’s a shame Baal’s Burst doesn’t work with Beidou’s, you shouldn’t expect Baal to be incredibly strong just because she’s an Archon. There is always some dissonance in games when it comes to a character’s strength in the story and in gameplay. Genshin Impact is the same.

And while it definitely sucks, it’s the norm for gacha games to hide gameplay possibilities behind whaling and pulling the same characters several times. Of course C0 Raiden will be “underwhelming” if compared to C3 or C6 Raiden. Or else rich people won’t be emptying their wallets on the gacha.

In any case, remember that before Zhongli was buffed, miHoYo teased the buff and implemented it in a private beta test. If Baal does get buffed, miHoYo will probably tease it in the next few months.

Genshin Impact is available on PC, PlayStation, and Mobile. A Switch version is coming too. You can always reach me on Twitter for a chat @A_iyane07.
