Genshin Impact new character Yun Jin and Gothic Lolita fashion explained

Gothic Lolita is a real type of fashion originating from Japan that drew its inspiration from dolls and clothing from the Victorian Era (180-1914) and French Rococo (1723 and 1759).

It's basically the darker side of Lolita fashion, fusing gothic darker colors, themes and influences with the cute / kawaii aspect of Lolita fashion. Gothic Lolita is also often abbreviated to Gothloli.

Gothic Lolita fashion typically uses knee or ankle length frilly skirts with petticoat, stockings, garters, boots, ribbons and hairbands.

Characters dressed in Gothic Lolita fashion is a typical archetype found in anime. So it was inevitable for Genshin Impact to end up adding a Gothloli character like Yun Jin.

It's also important to note the influence of Rozen Maiden, a manga by Peach-Pit that got an anime in 2004. Rozen Maiden is long-story short a battle royale with dozens of dolls dressed in Gothic Lolita fashion fighting each other with magical superpowers.

The Rozen Maiden anime is pretty much the one thing that introduced Gothic Lolita fashion to a lot of people outside Japan in the early 2000s. Most notably thanks to its iconic character Suigintou, who was one of the first big roles of Rie Tanaka.

It's thanks to her sultry voice as Suigintou that Rie Tanaka was later typecasted to voice Lisa in Genshin Impact. As most of the characters in Genshin Impact were created by miHoYo witha seiyu (voice acors) ni mind, they didn't do auditions. Rie Tanaka is also a huge otaku herself, and already cosplayed Suigintou.

Other popular and fairly recent Gothloli characters you might know about are: Ranko Kanzaki in Idolmaster Cinderella Girls, Yurika Toudou in Aikatsu, Celestia Ludenberg in Danganronpa, Lunalu in Granblue Fantasy, or Tokisaki Kurumi in Date A Live.
