Sucker Punch made the rumored Ghost of Tsushima ‘Director’s Cut’ official by announcing the expansion yesterday.

The open-world stealth game soared to critical acclaim last year for its poignant depiction of Feudal Japan during the Mongol invasion.

The title received multiple awards for its gameplay, including a few nods towards its breathtaking score. Jin Sakai’s journey will now continue on to Tsushima’s neighboring island.

The History of Iki Island

Iki Island is located in the Tsushima Strait of the Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan.

The island is oval in shape and known to be volcanic, with the last eruption occurring over 400,000 years ago.

We know from Ghost of Tsushima’s base game that the island of Tsushima suffered an invasion by Kublai Khan’s Yuan fleet in November 1274. One week later, the Yuan army left Tsushima and made their way to attack Iki Island.

Taira no Kagetaka was Iki’s governor at the time, who deployed over 100 samurais to defend the island against the invasion. By morning, the governor’s castle was surrounded by the overbearing Yuan forces, prompting Kagetaka to send his daughter away with the loyal samurai Sōzaburō through a secret passage.

Sadly, Kagetara’s daughter was killed as she attempted to flee to the mainland, but Sōzaburō made it to Hakata Bay located North West of Fukuoka City to spread the word about Iki Island’s demise.

Kagetaka made one final attempt to defeat the Yuan forces with 36 of his men, but their efforts were not enough.

The Mongol invasion is a horrific period of Japanese history, and it is currently unknown how much of Iki Island’s past will appear in Ghost of Tsushima’s expansion.
