The annual Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards will see video games added as a category for the first time when the event returns in 2019.

The awards ceremony which recently celebrated its year was originally created in order to celebrate authentic LGBT inclusion across a large media spectrum. Throughout the years, new categories have been added including Outstanding Kids and Families Programming in 2018. It has recently been announced that the 2019 categories will include video games for the first time in GLAAD's long-running history.

The category of Outstanding Video Game is open to games that have an impactful storyline revolving around LGBT topics. This expands outwards to the authentic representation of LGBT characters and how LGBT-inclusive material is worked into the content.

In order for a title to be eligible for the category, it must be released between before December 31, 2018. Anything released prior to the beginning of 2018 must have new content published within this duration as that will be the focus for consideration.

The 30th annual GLAAD Media Awards will take place next year covering a wide range of different categories including Outstanding Documentary, Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Variety or Talk Show Episode, Outstanding Blog, and much more.
