Kratos came to this realm to escape his actions in the previous three games. After killing the Pantheon, the realm is inevitably in turmoil, and he could never live in peace there. Kratos' reluctance eventually found its limit, and now he has begun war with Asgard.

Baldur and Freya

Balder Angry With Freya For Stealing His Life Away

Baldur served as a recurring annoyance and enemy for Kratos. Kratos just wanted peace in this new realm, and Baldur continued to follow and fight Kratos in hopes of finally feeling pain through battle. Freya is an uneasy ally to Kratos and Atreus, and later, it's shown that she is the ex-wife of Odin. Baldur is later revealed to be Freya's son, who is then conflicted in helping Kratos in his attempt to kill her son, using her magic to separate their fight.

After accidentally breaking the spell on Baldur with a magical arrow, Kratos is able to kill him. Seeing her son die at Kratos' hands, Freya declares she will "rain down agony, every violation imaginable" upon Kratos. Being the ex-wife of Odin and a Valkyrie, it's clear Freya poses a clear and powerful threat now hunting Kratos and Atreus. Mimir also informs Kratos that Freya is asking about her hidden Valkyrie wings.

Atreus' Real Name

Another reveal at the end of the game is Atreus' name, Loki (Given by his mother). Loki is a prominent figure in Norse mythology for events that already happened before the game's story. While this is a clear deviation from direct mythology, Loki will possibly play a larger role down the road with the interactions between other Norse gods.

Atreus is shown to have his father's Spartan Rage strength and is still coming to terms with being a god by the end of the game. He has been shown to have magical abilities and may have much more to grow into, which is more in line with Loki's mythology. Atreus is now an established character in Norse mythology, giving the developers lots of possible inspiration for what's next.

Wall of Prophecy

God of War Mural Depicting Atreus and A Man

In Jotunheim, Kratos sees a mural of Atreus holding a man in his arms, presumably dying. Kratos does not mention this to his son and continues on. This mural could outline the future death of Kratos later on in their story.

Ragnarök is a time when many gods fight and kill each other through the Norse realm. While Kratos has escaped death many times before, Ragnarök will make the realm a war zone with a target on his back. The mural also depicts some connection between Atreus and the man, which could represent Kratos finally passing the torch to his son.

Thor and His Sons

God of War Thor Arriving At Kratos' House

Later in the game's story, Kratos and Atreus face down Magni and Modi. Upon meeting them, they claim to be sent to bring Kratos in and fight him when he refuses. In the initial fight, Kratos is able to kill Magni, and Modi is killed by Atreus later on. Fighting both of them at once, Kratos has further demonstrated he is a threat to any godlike being that comes in his path, even in this new realm.

After killing both of Thor's sons, Brok warns Kratos of the possible wrath from Thor that is soon to follow. By killing Baldur, Kratos is establishing himself as a threat to the gods of Asgard. While Thor's wrath is hinted at during the game, there is a secret ending to the game, making this clear.

Kratos and Atreus are able to return home and rest after the events of the last mission, but the threat of Fimbulwinter is still on the horizon. After resting at home, it's said a few years have passed before Kratos answers the door to his home, finding Thor on their doorstep. The outside also seems much more frozen and snowy, meaning Fimbulwinter has arrived or is about to, and Thor has come to get his revenge.
