God of War: Ragnarok Could Be Like The Last of Us 2 by Allowing You to Play As Atreus

God of War creators looked to The Last of Us Part 2 for inspiration when creating the game.

God of War (2018) needs no introduction. Its touching and captivating narrative has been played and loved by millions of gamers across the globe. Telling the story of the turbulent yet loving bond behind father and son, God of War has been one of PlayStation’s finest releases to date.

Even though Sony Santa Monica have, so far, remained tight-lipped on what the sequel could include, a developer from the team has hinted at the possibility of players playing through the eyes of Atreus, Kratos son.

Concept artist at Santa Monica, Samuel Matthews, spoke recently on the God of War podcast and indicated the potential chance that players could take the reins, in some capacity, of Atreus much like Ellie in The Last of Us Part 2.

In the short video on Instagram, Matthews discussed how The Last of Us had a big impact on 2018’s God of War. He also said that Santa Monica is looking to The Last of Us 2 for more inspiration when it comes to Ragnarok.

Matthews said that the team behind God of War might be considering doing something similar like what Naughty Dog did with Ellie and Abby and how the player could shift between both perspectives.

The Last of Us Part 2 came up against quite a bit of criticism due to its unique gameplay and the shift away from Joel and even though Kratos is still apparently a main part of Ragnarok, it will be interesting to see how fans of the franchise will react to this if it trues out to be true.

Personally, I think this concept could work very nicely given how God of War (2018) ended and to experience the viewpoint of another key character is a brilliant idea and something I wish many more games implemented.

God of War: Ragnarok is still set for release this year on the PS5 and PS4.
