Amazon Prime Video, Amazon's video subscription service, announced that it gave a series order to the God of War live-action television series for a premier worldwide broadcast, as reported by Deadline, and Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director Cory Barlog is also joining the project as an executive producer.

The adaption of the Norse-Mythology action game God of War was first confirmed in March through another exclusive report by Deadline, and it was reported back then that Prime Video was in negotiations for a TV series based on the game. Now it seems the negotiations have gone through successfully, as an order (rights for an exclusive broadcast from the production company) has gone forward. The God of War TV series — co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions — will now premier on Prime Video in more than 240 countries worldwide.

Cory Barlog shares the executive producer position with Oscar nominee writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (known for their work on Children of Man and The Expanse), and Rafe Judkins (The Wheel Of Time TV adaption). Roy Lee, the American film producer who worked on horror masterpieces such as The Ring and The Grudge, is among the additional executive producers list, which contains multiple prominent producers and co-producers from Santa Monica Studio.

“Rafe, Mark and Hawk are crafting a transportive series that charts a path through the ancient mythological journey of Kratos,” said Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, as she praised the current writing team. The report also confirmed the show won't stray far from the main premise of the award-winning game, and it will still continue to follow Kratos's journey of grief and redemption together with his son as they fight many mythical gods and monsters for the fate of the world.

This isn't the only Sony IP currently slated for a television adaption, as Peacock has gotten the premier rights for the Twisted Metal show currently in the works, and HBO is already gearing up for another Sony exclusive adaption premier with The Last of Us airing on January 15. This also isn't the last we will hear from Amazon Studios and its involvement in gaming, as the company is also taking part in a Fallout TV series and a Mass Effect adaption, and is in a partnership with DJ2 Entertainment, which is working on adaptions of popular franchises like Life is Strange, Disco Elysium and It Takes Two.
