Granblue Fantasy Versus Introduces Metera, the Skillful Archer
Don't keep her waiting.
The Tokyo Game Show hits keep coming. This time, Granblue Fantasy Versus gets some love. Metera, the sexy archer, is revealed in the trailer below.
I’ll level with you–I know almost nothing about Granblue Fantasy. Never played it. I know Nobuo Uematsu composed the music for it, which is sweet, and I know it’s a really popular mobile game. That’s all though.
However, I do know Arc System Works. I know they are an absolute monolith in the world of anime fighting games–that they invented the genre with Guilty Gear, re-popularized it with the Blazblue franchise, and maintained their momentum with Guilty Gear Xrd, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and Blazblue: Cross Tag Battle. I also know that Granblue Fantasy Versus is looking like a premier fighting game release of early 2020.
How do I know? Just look at this game. The animations are so beautiful. I remember a time when fighting games had too few frames of animation–attacks would look like a slideshow. At this point, though, I’m starting to wonder if we should tell Arc System Works to stop animating–that their games are starting to look too good. It’s becoming distracting.
I really like what I’m seeing in this video. Metera begins combos from a variety of ranges, and she seems to specialize from about a half-screen distance away. Basically, she seems like a really cool zoning character with good situational damage. Makes sense–she is an archer, after all. In the past, my only concern for GFVS was whether it would have enough interesting combo routes. This Metera trailer has helped lay that concern to rest.
Granblue Fantasy Versus releases for PS4 on February 6, 2020. The developers have expressed interest in porting the game to PC, though, so let’s all keep our fingers crossed.
