Although best known for their dark and gritty Hotline Miami series, Devolver Digital’s upcoming title GRIS is an absolutely gorgeous display of artistry.
Starting off lying peacefully on the hand of a giant staue, a young lady named Gris raises her head. Her hair dances in the breeze with a washed out water-color tone and immediately the trailer shows the viewer that they are in for a particularly artistic experience. She then takes off running through deserts, fountains, and increasingly bizarre landscapes in this 2D platformer.
As the trailer unfolds, we see the protagonist propelling into the air, traversing platforms, encountering an enormous shadow-like bird, and meeting strange characters before waking up once again on the statue’s now crumbling hand. The game’s aesthetic seems reminiscent of Supergiant Games’ Transistor while the flow of Gris’ dress may remind players of titles like Journey or American McGee’s Alice: Madness Returns. Furthermore, Devolver Digital express that the game will be free of death, danger, and frustration.
GRIS is due to launch on Nintendo Switch and PC on December of this year; you can check out the game’s reveal trailer below:
