Legendary announced its Gundam live action project with Netflix is still in production, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts from Kong: Skull Island now directing - however, the movie Gundam G Savior is trending on Twitter as Gundam fans compare the two projects' origins.

What's Gundam G Savior?

Gundam G Savior was a live action Gundam movie co-produced by Sunrise and Polestar, a Canadian company. The movie released on June 18, 1999 in Japanese theaters. While G Savior reuses the Universal Century setting of the original Gundam series, its a brand new story with exclusive characters and factions.

The G-Savior movie isn't particularly well regarded among most Gundam fans. Mainly because Sunrise and the Japanese staff didn't participate in the project. The Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, or all mecha series in general, have a focus on character psychology and the ravages of war. However, G-Savior feels more like some generic Western sci-fi space movie.

What's the new Netflix Gundam live action project?

First off, it's important to note that while everyone, myself included, call it the "Netflix Gundam live action movie" because that's what Google decided it's called, Legendary is producing the movie. Netflix is only the distributor and has nothing to do with the movie itself.

Next, the Gundam Live-action movie was first announced in 2018 by Legendary and Sunrise, though the project seemed in a stalemate. Now, we learned Jordan Vogt-Roberts is the director. And comicbooks writer Brian K. Vaughn is doing the script.

Lastly, it's important to note it's normal and always been a thing for popular anime and manga series to receive live action adaptations in Japan. (Personally speaking, I recommend the 1998 Live-Action adaptation of GTO as a must watch.)

However, nowadays anime became mainstream, qo more and more western companies, Hollywood spearheading, have been doing their own live action adaptations. So it's no surprise a new Gundam one is coming.

New Legendary Gundam live action movie story details, is it canon or related to past series?

For now, we don't know. Either the movie will be set in Universal Century, either it'll be its own timeline and a standalone. Just like the various series Sunrise releases every now and then. From G Gundam to Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans. I don't really need to introduce those if you're a Gundam fan.

However, since its announcement, it seems like this new Gundam Netflix will be much closer to its origins than G Savior. For now, we can only wait and see how it will fare out, but it already seems to be a more hopeful project.

In any case, Famitsu pointed out it's possible it'll be standalone and a brand new story, but it's just speculation. I do share that guess. But for now, we can only wait for more information. (Credits to Famitsu for the featured image)
