The first Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway's Flash movie was finally released after several delays, and the studios at Sunrise in charge of producing the sequel are hard at work, part 2 is soon entering story boarding phase. Moreover, more Gundam projects set in the Universal Century were teased: a new sequel to Gundam Unicorn and Gundam Narrative (NT).

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’s Flash (Senkou no Hathaway in Japanese) was originally a novel. This is a mainly unknown fact outside Japan, but besides the anime shows, there’s a plethora of Gundam manga and novels. Most never ever get localized, though there are several fan translation projects.

Yoshiyuki Tomino, Gundam‘s original author and director, wrote some of these works. And Gundam Hathaway’s Flash is one of these novels. It's a sequel to the most iconic Gundam movie, Char's Counterattack (CCA). The story features Hathaway, Bright Noah’s son, as he *spoilers for the first movie* and most notably pilots the pointy mobile suit RX-105 Xi Gundam.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway's Flash Part 2 update, UC, NT sequel teased

Soon after announcing the Gundam Hathaway movie adaptation project, Sunrise had revealed the novels would be adapted with several movies. Japanese theaters screened the first movie on June 11, 2021. After several delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Though it was not as many delays as the final Eva movie. Netflix added Gundam Hathaway a few weeks later.

In the October 2021 issue of Gundam Ace magazine, (released on August 27, shared through the usual magazine leaks), one of Sunrise's animation producers on the Gundam Hathaway project noted that Part 2 is almost in storyboard phase (Ekonte). Moreover, once Sunrise is done with Hathaway, it plans to release a new sequel to Gundam Narrative, the 2018 movie sequel to Gundam Unicorn. So yeah, the UC timeline will keep going.

More on future Gundam projects

Box-office wise, Gundam Hathaway is the highest grossing Gundam film in Japan since CCA. The movie looks fantastic, and Netflix quality doesn't do it justice. I reccomend buying the bluray.

Yoshiyuki Tomino is also currently working on the Gundam G no Reconguista movies, with the third movie out in Japan. G-Reco was an amazing series and the movies so far only confirmed that. It's my favorite recent Gundam show by far. Sunrise also officially re-announced a Gundam Seed movie. Over a decade after we first heard of the project.
