Today, Square Enix's recently-formed Luminous Studio, which includes Final Fantasy XV veterans and is helmed by COO and head of studio Hajime Tabata, revealed its first project.

The studio was created to produce innovative games and entertainment content, and the first project is indeed not a game, but a collaboration with the Japanese state-owned TV NHK.

While it's not a game, it'll still allow the studio to flex its graphics muscles with a CGI video production titled "The Birth of Humanity" featuring 4K high-definition computer graphics, motion-capture tech to realistically reproduce the movements of primates.

The first episode will air in Japan on April 8th, the second on May 13th, and the third on June 10th. The visuals are said to be so good that they can be compared with live action.

Hajime Tabata himself provided a comment, mentioning that he merged his studio's CGI tech with NHK's documentary production expertise in order to create a documentary the likes of which have never been seen before.

The plot is about the ancestors of humanity that were weak at the beginning, struggling to survive against competing species. Yet, by using their wisdom and accidental discoveries, they gradually and desperately increased their power and reversed the relationship with other living beings. When Tabata-san heard that plot, he wanted to work on it, and under the supervision of experts, they brought to life the ancestors of humanity as the heroes of the story.

The primitive world has been reproduced in a lively and realistic view, and Tabata-san hopes that it will lead to a new understanding of humanity among viewers.
