Harry Potter: Wizards Unite is developer Niantic's follow-up to their wildly successful Pokemon Go app. Niantic is gearing up to release Wizards Unite this year and has put the game out for a beta test in New Zealand.

In 2016, Pokemon Go took the world by storm, becoming a massive hit almost instantly. To date, the game has been downloaded over 1 billion times worldwide and has grossed over $3 billion in revenue. Niantic is hoping to take another supremely popular franchise in Harry Potter and catch lightning in a bottle for a second time.

The moment-to-moment gameplay in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be similar to Pokemon Go. You'll still explore through the real-world map and interact with different locations. From what we've seen so far, the game involves quite a bit of tracing the screen to cast your many spells. You might be fighting off an enemy or helping a fantastic beast free itself.

Wizards Unite won't have you joining a Hogwarts House. Instead, the game focuses heavily on cooperation (hence the title). You'll be working with other witches and wizards to solve the many problems of the wizarding world. This being a Harry Potter game, there will also be a storyline for you to follow. The developers are saying it will be a "deep, multi-year narrative arc", so Niantic seems committed to seeing this game through the long haul.

Fans of the franchise outside of New Zealand will have to wait a little longer to jump in. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will be launching sometime in 2019 for iOS and Android mobile devices.
