Why Haruhi Suzumiya and God Knows are trending on Twitter?
Turns out this is yet another case of a recent anime series referencing an older classic. In this week’s Bokutachi no Remake, episode 5, one of the Heroines, Nanako Kogure (voiced by Aimi Terakawa), is seen singing God Knows. Bokurema, the series’ official abbreviation, has been trending on Twitter as well.
Bokutachi no Remake is set in 2006 and focuses on Hashiba Kyouya, a 28 years old game developer who ends up rewinding time to his university years and tries to redo his life without regrets. It’s full of interesting otaku and anime-related moments, such as this God Knows and Haruhi Suzumiya reference.
Bokutachi no Remake is also a romantic comedy, and Episode 5 includes some developments in that regard, which added fuel to the fire. Many fans are discussing the episode on Twitter, both in Japanese and in English, leading to Bokurema and God Knows trending.
A collab key visual was also published, featuring Shinoaki cosplaying Haruhi:

Bokutachi no Remake is initially a light novel series written by Kionachi started in March 2017 in Japan. I’ve been reading the manga adaptation before the anime adaptation began and it’s a good series overall. If you were already watching anime in the mid-2000s, you can relate to several moments too, including this God Knows scene from the anime.
More on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
The main Haruhi Suzumiya novel series didn’t get any new anime adaptation since The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie back in 2010. And it’s unlikely a new anime will happen anytime soon seeing the Kyoto Animation arson attack two years ago.
The studio is slowly getting back to its feet lately and keeps nurturing awesome talent. Right now, Kobayashi san’s Maid Dragon season 2 is airing, and it’s the first TV anime Kyoto Animation did since the attack. Haruhi Suzumiya is still pretty popular in Japan and worldwide. The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls Starlight Stage (Deresute) also made Haruhi Suzumiya trend on July 25. By announcing a collab event is coming soon. I wouldn’t rule out more Haruhi Suzumiya anime happening one day.
