The popular game mode, Hearthstone Battlegrounds, provides a unique auto-battle experience within the Hearthstone realm. You must carefully pick the heroes because each one has its own special hero ability or passive skill. Although Blizzard constantly updates and provides new patches, the game is still far from balanced. Certain heroes are in meta, and it's important to keep track of them if you want to gain the upper hand in the arena.

Knowing your hero's power well and applying the most useful build is the key to emerging victorious from the Battlegrounds Arena. Let's take a closer look at the best heroes in Hearthstone Battlegrounds based on how useful their abilities are. We will also take into consideration how well they work with certain builds and provide you with tactical advice that you can utilize.

10 Teron Gorefiend

Teron Gorefiend in Hearthstone

Teron Gorefiend was introduced in patch 25.4, so he's a rather new hero. Whoever has played Hearthstone Battlegrounds for a while knows that the latest heroes are usually very effective; this is the case with Teron as well. He comes with the ability to choose a friendly minion, destroy it at the start of combat, and then resummon an exact copy once you have space.

This works well with Undead or Beast builds; it will give you an advantage early on since you can pretty much copy all the minions with Reborn. Later on, you can use it for your best scaling Deathrattle minions like Anub’arak, Nerubian King, or Goldrinn, The Great Wolf.

9 Patches The Pirate

Patches The Pirate from Hearthstone

Patches The Pirate is a must if you want to play Pirates. Currently, it's extremely difficult to go for a Pirate build unless you pick this hero. His unique ability to buy a Pirate for 3 gold (that scales down to 0 gold with every pirate bought) will grant you a lot of flexibility.

Firstly, you will be able to survive the early and mid-game easily. Secondly, you will come in the late game with your heavy pirate army that can hold the enemies long enough until you get your key Tier 5 and Tier 6 units. Just be sure to buy every single Pirate you get in the tavern early since surviving mid-game is the most difficult thing when going with this build.

8 Trade Prince Gallywix

Trade Prince Gallywix in Hearthstone

As the name implies, Trade Prince Gallywix is all about the shiny coins. His ability is simple: once you sell a minion, you get 1 extra gold for it next turn. This type of ability works best with Murlocs and Elementals, although you can give it a shot with Pirates as well.

Try to buy and sell as many Battlecry minions as you can. Playing like this, you can use their Battlecry and get a return on your investment the next turn since Gallywix's ability will return a portion of the gold spent in the next round.

7 Galakrond

Galakrond in Hearthstone

Mighty Proto-dragon Galakrond can easily be the most interesting hero out there. His ability is to replace a minion in the tavern with a higher-level minion. This doesn't sound too powerful, but keep in mind that the ability can be stacked.

Your goal in the first five or six turns is to scale one minion to the Tier 5 or Tier 6 flagship minion that you desire for your build. While you do that, you will lose one gold per turn, and you will have to Freeze before the turn ends, which means that survivability during this time is of the essence. Buy as many minions as you can until you unlock the key creature for your build.

6 Reno Jackson

Reno Jakcson in Hearthstone

Reno Jackson has an ability that looks very different from Galakrond's, but they work in the same way. Reno can make a friendly minion golden — but only once per game. This works well with all races. Almost every build has that one unit that can change the whole game, and you get to make it golden.

As mentioned, what you need to do with Reno is survive long enough until you get your most important minion and turn it golden. This can be tricky sometimes, as we all know that the cards are not always in our favor. That's why Reno and Galakrond's abilities work in similar ways; it sounds simple if you can get the right card. If not, well, better luck next time.

5 King Mukla

King Mukla in Hearthstone

King Mukla likes to hand out Bananas to everyone but keeps two for himself as well. Bananas give you a +1/+1 or +2/+2 perma-buff on a friendly minion, and it costs you 1 gold each time you use it. There have been many buffs and nerfs, but King Mukla remained unaffected by them since he is well-balanced.

You can use his ability to strengthen your army of Mechs or Dragons, as their stats are very difficult to scale otherwise. This hero is strong in all game stages, and it's a safe pick if you are aiming to end up in the upper arena bracket.

4 C’Thun

Cthun in Hearthstone

Similar to Mukla, C'Thun's ability enables him to increase the stats (+1/+1) of his minions. However, since this ability can't be targeted, it's not as easy to survive in mid-game with C'Thun. The good thing is that C'Thun scales much better than Mukla, as his ability upgrades each turn.

The safest choice would be to go with a Divine Shield Mech or Dragon build and just empower your minions with this ability. With some luck, you will survive the mid-game and end up with your high-stat Divine Shield army in the late game.

3 George the Fallen

George The Fallen from Hearthstone

George the Fallen is all about Divine Shields. As the price for the Divine Shield is mere two gold, you can imagine that this will bring you an insane advantage in every stage of the game. As soon as you get your first powerful minion, you will want to enhance it with a Divine Shield.

Your safest bet is to go with Murlocs, as they can get Poison as well. Having minions with Divine Shield and Poison at the same time is the current meta in Hearthstone Battlegrounds. However, you can also go with any other build and simply hand out the shields to your most powerful minions; surely nothing can go wrong with that tactic.

2 Shudderwock

Shudderwock in Hearthstone

A legendary shaman, Shudderwock has the ability to add 1/1 Shuddering twice per game. Shuddering repeats all the Battlecries you have played so far. As you might assume, if you want to unleash the full potential of this ability, Murlocs are your preferred choice when playing Shudderwock. Keep in mind that, for example, builds with Nagas will be pretty useless in the hands of Shudderwock, since they don't benefit much from Battlecries.

Buy as many Battlecry minions as you can get, and as soon as you get Bran Bronzebeard, use your first Shuddering. After a while, you can use the second one as well, as the buffs will stack and your army will get a huge stat increase. Just be sure not to play Uther the Lightbringer before using Shudderings, as this minion Battlecry will put 15/15 stats on several of your minions.

1 Sire Denathrius

Sir Denathrius in Hearthstone

Sire Denathrius chooses one of two quests at the start of the game, despite them being removed in Hearthstone Battlegrounds Season 3. This will give you an advantage in the arena. The thing is, quests are very powerful, and the best choice would be to go with the easiest one. In this way, you will easily survive the early and mid-game phases.

Since there are many quests, we can't give you specific advice for every single one, but you should definitely give Sire Denathrius a try, as most of the quests are OP. Usually, the ones that work the best are with Murloc, Demon, or Elemental builds. You can also simply use the quest to survive long enough until you get your perfect build in place.
