Back at the end of March, developer Quantic Dream announced -- and seemingly everyone missed it -- that as of March 31st Heavy Rain had sold an impressive 4.5 million copies.
For those that don't know, Heavy Rain is an interactive drama, action-adventure game developed by Quantic Dream -- the team also behind Fahrenheit, Beyond: Two Souls, and the upcoming Detroit: Become Human -- and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment exclusively on the PS3 back in February of 2010.
The game is essentially a film noir thriller, that features four diverse protagonists involved with the mystery of the Origami Killer, a serial killer who uses extended periods of rainfall to drown his victims. The game mostly consists of QTE, where decisions and actions can have substantial impact on the game's narrative. For example, the main characters can be killed, and certain actions will lead to different scenes throughout the game and different endings.
Heavy Rain upon release was both a critical and commercial success, winning multiple Game of the Awards and selling over three million copies by August 2013, which means it has sold another 1.5 million in nearly the four years since. As you may know, a PS4 version of the game with improved graphics and resolution was sold in March 2016, as a standalone purchase and in a package with Beyond: Two Souls.
The game is largely considered a pioneer of interactive stories, paving the way for the genre which has found great success in recent years.
Heavy Rain is available for PS4 and PS3.
