Development on Ninja Theory’s upcoming action RPG Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice seems to be coming along quite well. The newest developer diary released today, and it reveals the voice cast along with how a new technology implemented them into the game.

In the game, Senua’s story of mental illness is told through her visions and voices. Ninja Theory’s Chief Creative Ninja Tameem Antoniades explained how the studio utilized custom technology in order to accurately portray the pain and torment that Senua was experiencing in the game. Rather than simply using voices, Antoniades stated that they used the game’s voice actors in full costume through a version of motion capture.

“I never gave up hope that we can find a way to actually visibly see the characters instead of just hearing their voices. So, when it came to casting, I cast for their face and what they looked like as well as their voices.”

Jesse Wylde, the studio’s Costume Designer, had roughly a day at most for each voice actor’s costume to be complete. The voice cast of the game and their characters are broken down as follows:

  • Steven Hartley – Zynbel (Senua’s druid father)
  • Oliver Walker – Dillion (Senua’s lover)
  • Ellie Piercy – Galena (Senua’s mother)
  • Chipo Chung – Narrator
  • Melina Juergens – Senua
  • Nicholos Boulton – Drouth (Senua’s friend)

In order to accurately mix the game’s reality with Senua’s mental visions and flash backs, Ninja Theory incorporated motion capture green screen footage into scenes already created with CGI. It’s all part of the developer’s cheaper way of creating a new AAA game and it seems to be coming along quite well.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has been in development since 2014 when it was initially announced at Gamescom. It blends a mix of Celtic and Norse mythology while showing the struggle our warrior, Senua, is going through in her battle with mental illness.

There is still no release date for Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, but it is set to release in 2017. The game will release on both PS4 and PC
