Blizzard Entertainment’s ongoing arena brawler Heroes of the Storm is getting yet another new character. This time the company is pulling from the Diablo franchise to bring us Malthael. The fallen angel is most recently famous for his role as the antagonist in the Reaper of Souls expansion. A short video of the villain was shown on the HotS official twitter account.

While this teaser only provided a silhouette, luckily a link within the tweet gave a better look at the so-called ‘Aspect of Death’. Malthael has his own page on the Heroes of the Storm website and he definitely feels very Grim Reaper like in this depiction. Parts of his bio don’t even shy away from his place as an embodiment of the end: ‘[He became] a Reaper of Souls and [eliminated] everything affected by demonic corruption, including humanity.’
As for his actual stats, Malthael is an Assassin class that specializes in damage and has high survivability and complexity. His Hero Trait is the ‘Reaper’s Mark’ which is activated through certain attacks, and will select specific enemies to receive even more punishment. For example, the attack ‘Soul Rip’ steals the essence of marked foes and gives Malthael a little under half the damage back as energy.
The coolest move has to be ‘Last Rites’ however, as you target an enemy hero and does some hearty damage: ‘Apply a death sentence to an enemy Hero that, after 2 seconds, deals damage equal to 50% of their missing Health.’ The best part is that if the target dies from the attack, the cooldown is reduced by 5 seconds so you can unleash even more destruction in quick succession!
Unfortunately no release date nor footage has been revealed yet showing Malthael in action. However, based on Heroes of the Storm‘s track record, it shouldn’t take long for that info to become available. This news is making me want to go back and play Diablo III: Reaper of Souls while waiting for the Aspect of Death to invade another franchise. Here’s hoping that HotS does him justice.
