During Sony's PS5 showcase that took place earlier this month, Hogwarts Legacy was revealed after being previously leaked in the past, and at one point even rumored to be developed by Rocksteady until that was debunked. The reveal of Hogwarts Legacy however was not entirely welcomed due to the recent controversy surrounding the creator of the fictional universe the game is set within. A FAQ has detailed exactly how much involvement J.K. Rowling has in the upcoming magical RPG, and it seems to be purposefully added in light of the situation online.

The author and creator of the Harry Potter books, J.K. Rowling has faced notable backlash dating back to 2017 when she was criticized for liking a tweet that was clearly transphobic. At the time representatives claimed it was a “middle-aged moment,” however since then, she has been incredibly public in her views. These views erupted this year and more recently, on the very week that Hogwarts Legacy was revealed. If you want to catch up on everything that's happened, it seems Glamour has a detailed breakdown of everything.

Hogwarts Legacy is being developed by Avalanche and published by Warner Bros. Games under the Portkey label. And the reveal trailer shows off Hogwarts in a much earlier period than Harry Potter fans are used too — the 1800s specifically. The game comes with RPG elements and features familiar lore while at the same time, not being a direct adaption to the films and books.

However, with Rowling trending alongside the games reveal, fans on Twitter were torn on whether or not to purchase the game as it would mean financially supporting Rowling and her views that many people within the community have deemed as transphobic, harmful, and disappointing. In light of this, the games FAQ page indicates that " J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game," it reads, "however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World".

The publisher also clarifies that "This is not a new story from J.K. Rowling." and also states that "While remaining true to J.K. Rowling’s original work, Portkey game developers chart new territory by creating fresh ways for fans to immerse themselves in the wizarding world."

The developer is said to be "creating a unique gaming experience that is inspired" by the Wizarding World and will discover "new and unexpected locations, characters and story elements."

In detailing whether the game has been created with Rowling's approval, Warner Bros. Games mentions the Portkey Games Label used for games set in the Wizarding World, "Each experience offered under Portkey Games will take place in the Wizarding World and will be authentic to the Wizarding World. J.K. Rowling is supportive of Portkey Games and has entrusted the design and creation of the games to WB Games and the developers involved."

While fans still seem unsure about buying the game, the matter isn't brought up in the FAQ which makes sense seeing as Rowling is, of course, going to profit from the sales of the game considering it's based on her IP. This has seen people claiming that, while they're excited about the game, they'll more than likely wait for the game to be available as a pre-owned product from physical retailers. However, users also want to buy it to support the developers behind the game who are getting caught up in everything.

Hogwarts Legacy is slated to be launching next year for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and the Xbox Series X | S.
