The Highlands outside Hogwarts castle are divided up into a dozen regions, each containing a variety of enemies, challenges, and Merlin Trials. You’ll need to explore them all if you want to uncover all the secrets and unlockables available in Hogwarts Legacy.
In the North Hogwarts Region, there are five Merlin Trials you will need to complete. Each of them will require you to solve a unique puzzle in order to finish the trial. This guide will walk you through where to find them, and how to solve each puzzle.
Moths To A Flame Trial
The first trial in the North Hogwarts region is just southwest of Hogsmeade. You’ll find it on the side of a cliff, just below where the people are flying the Hogwarts house kites.
To solve this trial, you’ll need to cast Lumos near the group of moths and bring them to the pillar closest to them. After activating the altar, the three pillars and three moth groups will be revealed. Luckily, all the moths and pillars are visible from the mallowsweet altar which makes it a breeze to finish the trial.
Nine Pillars Trial
You’ll find the second trial in the North Hogwarts region near the Forbidden Forest floo flame. Head west up the road from the floo flame, and you will find the mallowsweet altar just off the path to your right. Throw some mallowsweet down to begin the trial.
From the altar, face to the west, and you’ll see a series of pillars extending up the mountainside. To solve this puzzle, you’ll need to destroy the spheres on the top of each pillar. As you continue moving west, destroying them, you should easily find all nine closely grouped to each other.
Flipping Stones Trial
You’ll find the next trial just southwest of Jackdaws Tomb floo flame in the Forbidden Forest. After arriving at the trial, you’ll find three pillars close by, each with a cube-shaped stone on top of them. You’ll find the first pillar next to the mallowsweet altar, the second is down at the base of the lake, and the third one is on the small island.
After activating the trial, you’ll need to use Flipendo to rotate the stones on top so that the runes on each side of the cube align with the same runes on the pillar. You can rotate the top stone in multiple directions by moving around it and casting Flipendo from different sides.
Repairing Totems Trial
The fourth trial is located just north of the Mooncalf Den floo flame. When you arrive, you’ll need to take out the three poachers first. After doing so, throw some mallowsweet on the altar to begin the trial. This will cause the four stone totems that are nearby to break.
To solve this trial, you’ll need to cast Reparo on each of the four totems. They are all located pretty close to the altar, and you don’t need to repair them in any particular order to complete the trial.
Sinking Torches Trial
You’ll find the final trial just east of Korrow Ruins. Here, you’ll find three pillars, each with a torch on top of them. Your goal is to light the torches in the right order before they all sink into the ground.
You’ll find the first torch close to the mallowsweet altar, just across the small river to the south. The other two are westward up on the mountainside. The second torch is on the south side of the river inside a small building blocked by vines and the third is on the north side of the river, higher up on the mountain.
Start by burning the vines to access the second torch. Next, position yourself between the second and third torches. You’ll need to light them quickly to complete this trial. First, light the third torch on the mountainside, then the second one in the building, and finally the first one located near the altar.
