A comment from one of the developers of the upcoming Wizard World open-world adventure Hogwarts Legacy has suggested that each player's individual actions and choices may have repercussions that can affect the game's ending. The comment, which comes from Game Director Adam Tew during a 46-minute gameplay video showcase, released on the game's official YouTube channel last week, as pointed out by PCGamesN.

Tew made reference to how character choices will affect the game world, up to and including the ending. Specifically, he said, "Different interactions with different characters can also offer different choice points for the player, and then some of those things can affect things game-wide, some of these affect characters’ lives, the ending of the game." The quote occurs around the 21:50 mark in the video, just after the showcase reveals a side quest conversation between the player character and a Gryffindor student, Nellie Oggspire.

During the gameplay segment, Oggspire informs the player character about a group of enchanted flying keys, each of which will lead to a different locked chest somewhere in Hogwarts, which could yield rewards if the key can be placed in the lock, though she remarks that it's "not an easy task." The player character has the option of asking about why a former headmistress would have created the keys or asking Oggspire why she isn't searching for the keys herself, but the player instead opts to just agree to search for them. After prompting from the stream's host about the impact of side quests to the story, Tew remarks that the students are there to "flesh out the school, opportunities around it, what we can do." While his remark indicates that some of the players' choices will affect individual students and some will affect the story as a whole, he does not get into specifics. He adds, "The scale really varies, but those opportunities exist for the player."

Hogwarts Legacy has been generating a lot of positive response from the Harry Potter fan community since its announcement back in 2020, although leaks had reveled its existence as early as 2018. The open-world RPG set in the 1800s will feature fully customized characters as players assume the role of a new student at the school during the time when the Wizading World erupts in a goblin rebellion.

As for the degree that player choice will affect the endgame of Hogwarts Legacy, we'll have to wait until next year on February 10, when the game is scheduled to release for Playstation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
