Horizon Zero Dawn released exactly one year ago today so Sony Interactive Entertainment considered it as good of a time as any to reveal how well the game sold in its first year.

Sony stated that the game sold over 7.6 million units worldwide, which is incredibly impressive. It's so impressive in fact, that Sony also revealed that Horizon Zero Dawn has now become the company's most successful new first-party franchise launch on PS4. While that pool of new first-party IP on PS4 alone might be rather small, it's still staggering nonetheless.

Shawn Layden, Chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, spoke a bit about the sales of Horizon Zero Dawn by saying the following:

"We are incredibly grateful that Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Zero Dawn: The Frozen Wilds have been received so positively by so many gamers and it is a testament to the fantastic work of the entire team at Guerrilla. The combination of beautiful story-telling and great characters, with excellent gameplay mechanics, has resonated well with fans and led to this exceptional sales milestone."

Guerilla Games co-founder Hermen Hulst also gave a statement regarding the success of Horizon Zero Dawn and the satisfaction that he and the team had upon seeing the sales numbers:

"We had huge ambition for Horizon Zero Dawn and as we approached the launch we knew people were excited, but to see sales of this volume is truly mind blowing. Since launch, millions of players have joined Aloy on a quest to discover the secrets of the old ones. We hope they enjoy playing Horizon Zero Dawn as much as we enjoyed making it."

These sales numbers in conjunction with the critical praise that Horizon Zero Dawn received last year upon launching have almost certainly ensured that we will see a sequel at some point in the future. Just how far off that sequel is, however, remains to be seen.

If you still haven't played Horizon Zero Dawn for yourself, then you can pick up both the base game and its expansion, The Frozen Wilds, in one package known as the Complete Edition right now.
