Here is our guide to help you respec and reset your character's stats in Elden Ring, and how to get the special item Larval Tear to do it.

Elden Ring has multiple classes to start from, and the game freely lets you spend Runes to level up your stats. There is in fact so much freedom in character building that your stat distribution is not irreversible, and players who'd like to try building their character in another way - who want to respec their character - can do so after a certain point.

How to reset your stats and respec your character in Elden Ring

On paper, you need to have beaten the boss Rennala Queen of the Full Moon inside the Legacy Dungeon: Academy of Raya Lucaria. After beating that boss, you can pay her one Larval Tear to reset your stats and redistribute them. Note that you can't go below the default starting attributes that your class had.

Raya Lucaria Academy south gate entrance

Unless you're rushing, you will only reach the Raya Lucaria Academy after dozens of hours on Elden Ring, after clearing Stormveil Castle and defeating the boss Godrick the Grafted. The Academy is in the region you unlock after that, north of the game's starting point, also called the "blue" region by some players, as opposed to the "red" region found east of the starting point, which is also much harder. The entrance to the Raya Lucaria Academy dungeon is sealed by a barrier. You'll need the Academy Glintstone Key to open it.

Rennala Queen of the Full Moon is the final boss of the Academy. Once you've beaten Rennala, you'll be able to reset your stats by giving her one Larval Tear.

How to get a Larval Tear

Larval Tears are very rare items that drop from specific monsters: monsters who transform. You can most notably find one Larval Tear near the starting area of the game. To get it, you must defeat a zombie that turns into a giant bear found at the red spot on the map screenshot below:

Personally speaking, I'd say don't worry too much about respeccing at first. Even more so if Elden Ring is your first Souls game, or if you don't care about minmaxing. Just take your time to enjoy the game, and put points into the attributes that fit your playstyle. And when you conquer the Academy, you'll be able to respec if you feel like it. Though seeing how rare Larval Tears are, it'll be best to wait until further into the game to respec, unless you really can't stand your current build.
