What’s BepInEx and how to install and use it with Valheim

BepInEx lets you add or remove mods without having to close Valheim, simply by drag and dropping them in a folder. In order to use it, you need to already have launched Valheim at least once, so be sure to do that first if you’ve just bought the survival game on Steam.

Here are the steps to install BepInEx now. First, you need to actually download BepInEx on its official page through the manual download. After that, open your Valheim installation folder. If you don’t know where it’s located, you can open Steam, go to your library, right-click Valheim, go to properties, click local files, and then browse.

Next, open the BepInEx file you just downloaded, open its BepInEx_Valeim folder, and copy everything inside to your own Valheim game folder. Be sure to select “replace the files in the destination” to overwrite the original files. Now, if you launch Valheim again, you should see the BepInEx indicator at the top left of the screen.

Now, to use mods with BepInEx. Open your Valheim installation folder, then open the BepInEx folder, and lastly the plugins folder. Now, download the mod you want, and copy its .dll files into the plugins folder. Lastly, you can go back to your Valheim installation folder and go to the config folder to config the mod. And you’re done.

Valheim is still in development and available on Windows and Linux PC via Steam. A Mac version is under consideration, but for now, finishing the PC version is prioritized. The developers haven’t considered console releases yet but they might look into it in the future.
