Hundreds of Thousands of Gamers “Reach” the Stratosphere with EVE Online

There are times in which game developers do rather peculiar things, and project Skyward Sphere is definitely one of those.

EVE Online is all about space, and I doubt there are many, between its playerbase, that never dreamt of breaking free of Earth’s gravity.

On Wednesday they went quite near to achieving that dream, at least in spirit, as CCP Games launched a reproduction of an EVE Online pod powered by a high altitude balloon up into the stratosphere. The pod contained the names of the main characters belonging every EVE Online player active at December the 31st, 2011.

Apparently one successful launch isn’t enough, as CCP games is planning another, this time propelling the reproduction of a Rifter frigate even higher. Further details about this second attempt will be shared over the next few days.

Not only project Skyward Sphere is an extremely interesting initiative, but it also created some impressive footage, that you can see by watching the movie below, while I go brag to my friends that I went to space.
