Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity Becomes Best Selling Musou Game Ever In Four Days Thanks To Zelda’s Cute Eyebrows (Updated)

Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity sales have been going well, and rightfully so seeing the overall quality of Nintendo Switch's latest 1st party release.

Nintendo announced Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity on Switch has shipped over 3 million copies worldwide, that’s incredible sales numbers, only in four days since release. The announcement happened November 24, via the Japanese official Twitter account for the Zelda Musou series. Update: French journalist and sales specialist Oscar Lemaire confirmed this makes Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity the best selling Musou game ever.

The tweet reads: “The cumulative worldwide shipments for Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity has exceeded 3 million copies. Our deepest thanks to everyone. The trial version is still available, so please try the game out if the occasion presents itself.”

Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity is set one hundred years before the events of Zelda Breath of the Wild. Featuring the Champions of Hyrule and multiple other playable characters, the story depicts the battle against Calamity Ganon. Age of Calamity is the successor to the first Hyrule Warriors, originally released on Wii U in 2014, before getting ported to Nintendo 3DS and then receiving an ultimate enhanced version on Switch in 2018.

Moreover, Hyrule Warriors is what we call a Musou game, where one character matches against a thousand enemies. Players most notably need to defeat generals and occupy strategical points on the map. It’s a pretty popular genre overall, which would also explain the big sales. Plus, BOTW is one of the best selling games on Switch as well, so its appeal is playing a part for the sales of Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity.

Koei Tecmo and Omega Force developed Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. The previous game made when the developers borrowed another company’s IP was Persona 5 Scramble The Phantom Strikers, Available on PS4 and Switch in Japan since February 20, 2020, it’s most notably not a Musou game but an Action RPG.

Lastly, it’s important to remember a sequel to Breath of the Wild is also in development. This sequel, BOTW, and Age of Calamity, will be forming a pretty interesting trilogy. I personally can’t wait to see more of the sequel. Hopefully, it’ll make the supposedly shared Zelda timeline even more confusing and nonsensical. I hate Zelda timeline theories.
