Today, genDesign (the creators behind Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian) announced they will be partnering with Epic Games Publishing to implement a new "developer-first approach" to publishing its video games.

As mentioned in the Epic Games announcement, this will bring the most developer-friendly terms that "fundamentally changes" the current publishing model. With this new approach, genDesign keeps 100% of all IP and creative control, has its projects fully-funded by Epic Games, and offers at least 50% of all profits made by its games. Epic Games is also working with Remedy Entertainment (Control, Alan Wake) and Playdead (Limbo, Inside) to bring this new approach to fruition.

"genDESIGN, Remedy, and Playdead are among the most innovative and talented studios in the industry, with strong visions for their next games,” said Head of Epic Games Publishing Hector Sanchez in the announcement. “They will have full creative control, while Epic will provide a solid foundation of project funding and services.”

While Remedy will be making two games under Epic Games' new publishing approach, genDesign only mentions one new project in development. However, unlike its previous releases, it will be releasing on multiple platforms.

The Japanese studio genDesign is led by Fumito Ueda and former Team Ico developers, the creators behind the beloved Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian video games. While Team Ico was the team connected to Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian's development moved to genDesign during its long development cycle.

When we'll see genDesign's new game is still unknown. Knowing how long it took The Last Guardian to release, it may be a while until we see what they have in store.

If you are unfamiliar with Ueda's work, The Last Guardian is available on PS4 right now. There is also the Shadow of the Colossus remake for PS4 which Japan Studio and Bluepoint Games expertly and faithfully recreated for the modern platform.
