What makes a villain memorable? Is it their looks? Their thoughtful writing? Is it their menacing demeanor, their evil laugh, or perhaps their dastardly mustache? The truth is it's really hard to describe what makes a villain great.

Some villains are deeply believable (like The Master from Fallout) and others are one-dimensional (like Bowser). Is one worse than the other? Absolutely not. They're just different. Bowser doesn't need deep writing because he's mostly just there to get stomped on. And while he may not have a Shakespearean character arc, he's still one of the most iconic gaming villains. Here's why these antagonists work, why they're memorable, and why we love them.

There are some very minor spoilers ahead!

10 10/10 SHODAN (System Shock)

Shodan from System Shock: a metallic face surrounded by a mass of twisted wires.

SHODAN is the evil machine intelligence of the System Shock series, and she's absolutely terrifying, mainly because of her carefully crafted voice. To create SHODAN's iconic voice, Looking Glass Studios patched together multiple different voice actors. Additional sounds, such as pitch-shifting and stuttering, were then added in.

The result is amazing. SHODAN sounds like an unholy amalgamation of glitched-out hate. The best part is that she just keeps on talking. It's like she's so wrapped up in her own ego that she doesn't even realize how broken she sounds. Some of SHODAN's lines will send chills down your spine. "What is it like to be afraid? Why do you cling to such a pathetic existence?"

9 9/10 Senator Armstrong (Metal Gear)

Senator Armstrong from Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance; an intensely muscular balding man.

There's something so hilarious about this behemoth of a man sharing his vision for America while he gives Raiden a jumping double-stomp to the chest. For those unaware, Senator Armstrong is the villain of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. He's a Colorado senator with dreams of becoming president. He's also a 7-foot-tall former college football player who has nanomachines because of course he does. "Nanomachines, son!"

There's no doubt Senator Armstrong is iconic. Revolver Ocelot or Major Zero may spring to mind first at the term "Metal Gear villain", but Armstrong pops up often in memes. His boss fight is ridiculously fun, quotable, and probably one of the best boss fights of all time.

8 8/10 Dagoth Ur (The Elder Scrolls)

Dagoth Ur from The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind; a half-naked man with greyish skin and an ornate golden mask.

Dagoth Ur is the main antagonist of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and an extremely iconic villain. His backstory is deep and complicated, but basically, he's immortal, he wants to restore his ancient noble house, and he fancies himself a god.

One of the best things about Dagoth Ur is his lovely voice. He sounds not at all how you would expect him to. Voice actor Jeff Baker plays Dagoth Ur as a grand orator with a booming, noble voice, shouting things like "I'm a god! How can you kill a god?" Also going against the villain type, Dagoth Ur is surprisingly polite. He even lets the Nerevarine get the first hit on him when they fight.

7 7/10 Dutch (Red Dead Redemption)

Dutch Van Der Linde smoking a cigar in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Dutch Van Der Linde is a mysterious figure in Red Dead Redemption 1. Though often talked about, he doesn't actually appear until the end of the game. He's fleshed out more in Red Dead 2 as the charming, idealistic gang leader.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a very long game. Some players don't like that, but it did allow Rockstar to do something pretty cool with Dutch's character. He has an arc. At first he's a kind, almost fatherly figure. Then there are little cracks. He's weirdly elitist. He occasionally makes rude comments. He always tells you to get to work, but never really does anything himself. The player can grow to hate Dutch's narcissism through gameplay, the same way Arthur might.

6 6/10 Miles Edgeworth (Ace Attorney)

Miles Edgeworth from Ace Attorney raising an objection while flustered.

Miles Edgeworth is a prosecutor in the Ace Attorney series, the first major threat Phoenix Wright faces in court. His charming persona is disarming, but he's a serious antagonist. Surrounded by rumors of evidence tampering, Edgeworth initially has a reputation as a man who will do anything to win a case.

Without spoiling too much, Edgeworth's character is actually much deeper than this, which is why he's fondly remembered by fans. Edgeworth's charming personality, his touching character arc, and his complicated relationship with Phoenix all make him one of the most iconic video game villains of all time. He even got his own spin-off game at one point.

5 5/10 Ganon (The Legend of Zelda)

Link from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild facing off against Calamity Ganon.

Ganon is the legendary villain of The Legend of Zelda. Having been around for many years and going through multiple incarnations, he seemingly always comes back to haunt Link. He even fights in Super Smash Bros. in his humanoid form, Ganondorf.

One cool thing about Ganon is his consistency (or lack thereof) between games. At one point, he's a giant boar. In Breath of the Wild, he's a vicious cloudlike beast. As is mentioned in the Hyrule Historia, though Ganon may die, he will never truly leave Hyrule. His energy will reincarnate, over and over, always bent on world domination. He'll likely still be around even if the Legend of Zelda games are separated by hundreds of years.

4 4/10 Dr. Robotnik (Sonic the Hedgehog)

Dr. Robotnik looking especially mean.

Also known as Eggman, Dr. Ivo Robotnik is the dastardly villain of the Sonic series. He has an iconic appearance with his ovular body, cool sunglasses, and untamed mustache. His crazy inventions, which often seem impractical, make great boss fights. He has a fun voice — his voice actor, Mike Pollock, is a legend. Eggman was even portrayed by Jim Carey!

In the early days of Sega, its designers had a competition to come up with a new mascot for the company. Sonic the Hedgehog won the competition, of course, but Robotnik was also in it. He was originally drawn as a cute mustachioed man in pajamas. His design was reworked when he was introduced as Sonic's nemesis in the first game, and the rest is history.

3 3/10 Pyramid Head (Silent Hill)

Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2 standing against a dark void.

Pyramid Head is by far the most iconic villain in any horror game. He first appears in Silent Hill 2, with most fans regarding his appearances in later games as inappropriate, even non-canon.

Pyramid Head, like the other monsters of Silent Hill 2, is a representation of the protagonist's thoughts. He looks like like a demonic executioner. The pyramid itself conjures images of torture devices like the iron maiden. It's specifically mentioned in The Book of Lost Memories that "he [Pyramid Head] is a manifestation of James Sunderland's guilt and desire for punishment". He's also completely silent. Pyramid Head earned his reputation without saying a word, just based on his look.

2 2/10 GLaDOS (Portal)

GLaDOS, the evil computer that runs Aperture Labs in Portal.

GLaDOS is the popular, iconic villain of Valve's Portal. Not only is she a great villain, she's a great character. She makes Portal what it is. Without her, it's just another puzzle game. The best thing about GLaDOS is her sardonic wit.

She might be the funniest video game villain of all time, poking fun with lines like "Here come the test results: 'You are a horrible person.' That's what it says ... We weren't even testing for that." GLaDOS's humor sets her apart from other murderous AIs like SHODAN, AM, and HAL 9000. It reminds us that GLaDOS is fundamentally human, which arguably makes her even scarier.

1 1/10 Bowser (Super Mario)

Bowser wearing his wedding tux in Super Mario Odyssey.

Bowser tops this list because he's the one most people think of first when they hear "video game villain". He's got a simple personality, little to no dialogue, and he's extremely predictable. He kidnaps Peach. That's what he does, and it's just about all he does. Still, Bowser is inarguably the top dog.

Part of Bowser's success is probably due to all the spin-off games he's in. He'll put aside his differences with Peach and Mario so the three of them can drive go-karts or play some tennis. On the rare chance that he gets some dialogue, Bowser is actually kind of endearing. He comes across as a buffoon who really loves Peach, kidnapping her because he doesn't know how else to show it. Bowser's menacing appearance and long, storied history with Mario makes him the most iconic video game villain of all time.
