IKEA Lends a Helping Hand for Console Owners Buying Media Centers

Do you need a new media cabinet, but don't know if the ones in stores will be big enough to hold your giant PS5? IKEA has got you covered.

When the newest generation of consoles was beginning to be shown off in 2019 and 2020, memes about their sizes circled the internet. Now that we actually have the Xbox Series X and Ps5 in our houses (those of us who can find them that is) it’s clear just how big both consoles are. This has made many people rethink their media cabinets causing them to head to furniture stores in search of one that can hold the next-generational giants. Luckily, IKEA has created a tool to help prospective media cabinet buyers find something in the exact size they’re looking for.

First posted on Reddit by u/TomaccoTastesLikeGma, this picture shows that IKEA is leaning all the way in to help console owners. The mock-up consoles shown below are built with the exact same dimensions of the Series X and the PS5 and have measurements on the sides to help shoppers make a more informed decision.

"Which IKEA media storage unit will be able to fit my new, meme-ishly oversized, game console?" from gaming

IKEA clearly is having fun with their mock-ups as they both feature text that reads: “which IKEA media storage unit will be able to fit my new, meme-ishly oversized, game console?”

This sort of catering is extremely helpful because it means that you don’t have to drag your console out of your house to know whether or not a media cabinet will work. The PS5 is the largest console in modern history, so bringing it around shopping with you would be no small feat.

So far, no other furniture stores have had to-scale replicas of consoles, but it’s not a stretch to imagine that they might, depending on the success of IKEA’s mock-ups.
