Immortals Fenyx Rising Takes the Best Elements of Breath of the Wild and Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Shakes Them Up
Part Breath of the Wild, part Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the upcoming Immortals: Fenyx Rising strikes a fine balance between how they play.
With the huge roster of games releasing in the next month to coincide with the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/Series S, it’s easy to forget that the very end of the year will also have some big games to look forward to. Namely, Immortals Fenyx Rising–the action-adventure title from Ubisoft previously known as Gods & Monsters–is coming at the very beginning of December, and is worth keeping an eye on as one of the bigger releases to cap off 2020.
Ahead of the game’s launch this December, DualShockers had the chance to play a preview build of Immortals Fenyx Rising for a closer look at the upcoming Greek mythology-inspired game. With about four and a half hours of hands-on time with the game, our demo featured two different areas from the game’s setting in The Golden Isles and the opportunity to get a taste of its combat, puzzles, and exploration.

My biggest takeaway from playing through the demo so far is that like its original gameplay reveal highlighted, Immortals takes a lot of inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in both its style and how it plays. However, as someone that wasn’t necessarily the biggest fan of Breath of the Wild, Immortals feels like it has enough of its own elements to stand apart and, in some ways, fixes some of the issues that I had with it.
Coming from the team behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, it’s that game’s influences that make me feel most at home in Immortals in how it approaches combat and exploration. The demo showed me that while it might not be the deepest experience, there are enough of the elements I liked best from Breath of the Wild and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey mixed with its own mechanics that make Immortals seem like my ideal blend of the two.
Immortals Fenyx Rising will release for PS5, Xbox Series X/Series S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, Amazon Luna, and PC on December 3, 2020. For more on the game, you can also check out our recent hands-on written preview from DualShockers managing editor Logan Moore.
