Is James Gunn's The Suicide Squad a Sequel or a Reboot? What We Know from the New Trailer

I know, I know it's confusing.

We keep seeing more of The Suicide Squad, but many fans are wondering about its status in the DCEU. Is The Suicide Squad a sequel or a reboot?

James Gunn is a director known for making films about an unlikely group of characters banding together to achieve a goal. He’s done it with movies such as Super and Guardians of the Galaxy so he seems like the perfect fit to help save the Suicide Squad franchise after its disastrous film debut.

Questions about where this new Suicide Squad movie falls have been on everyone’s minds. Is The Suicide Squad a sequel or a reboot? Or maybe something new entirely? Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming R-rated DC movie.

Is The Suicide Squad a sequel or a reboot?

The Suicide Squad isn’t a reboot of the 2016 film in the way that many people might expect. It’s still working off of the same continuity that was established in Suicide Squad, but it’s “rebooting” the franchise to hopefully better set it up for success.

Peter Safran a DCEU producer said as reported by ScreenRant that Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is a “total reboot” and “not really a sequel” to the 2016 film. This plays into the upcoming film’s title as it’s not “Suicide Squad 2” or anything that references the initial film’s existence. It seems like DC is trying its best to distance itself from David Ayer’s underwhelming film.

Understandably, many people are confused about the continuity, so let me clarify things: The Suicide Squad is not a direct continuation of the story from Suicide Squad, but it still has a handful of returning cast members including Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag.
