Komi Can't Communicate, one of the most popular series this Fall 2021 anime season, has just ended with its final episode - was a season 2 officially confirmed?

This anime season, you probably didn't miss out on the antics of Komi-san, who just wants to make friends but has a severe case of social anxiety. To the point she can't even speak to other people. Komi Can't Communicate is a pretty good mix of comedy and touching moments, as the protagonist and her first friend Tadano try to make even more friends at their school.

Is Komi Can't Communicate getting a season 2 sequel and when?

Right after the final episode of Komi Can't Communicate, episode 12, aired in Japan on December 22, 2021, a second season was officially confirmed. Komi Can't Communicate Season 2 will be airing in Japan and simulcasted in the Spring 2022 anime season, starting April.

The sequel was announced with a trailer shared on the Japanese Twitter account for the series. Check it out below:

Possible production issues or delay incoming

It's interesting to note the second season will be aired only one anime season after the first. Personally speaking, I believe the "second season" was planned from the start but only got publicly announced now. It's just another case of a split cour series.

Furthermore, in the announcement, studio OLM stated it's "aiming" to release season 2 in April. Hinting that a delay is possible, seeing all the problems of the anime industry. Which were aggravated with the pandemic. Anime insider Yuyucow also pointed out it's the Kojima team at Studio OLM (the studio is made of around 10 teams) handling Komi-san, and that most of the episodes of Season 1 were actually outsourced.

What about the Komi Can't Communicate manga?

Komi Can't Communicate is serialized in Japan by its mangaka Tomohito Oda, under the title Komi-san wa Komyushou Desu. The series started in 2016. The manga is still ongoing every week in Shuukan Shounen Sunday, with over 23 volumes out in Japan. So there's still a lot of material to animate for a second season.

Volume 23 was just released in Japan this October. The manga is licensed by Viz in the US with 16 volumes out. Personally speaking, I haven't read Komi-san wa Komyushou in quite a while as I've grown a bit bored of it as the comedic situations are pretty predictable, with slow story developments. If you really liked the anime you should definitely pick up the manga though.
