This week's Famitsu Magazine includes a new interview with NieR creative director Yoko Taro and producer Yosuke Saito, celebrating the release of Voices of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars on PS4 and Switch.

It's no surprise to anyone used to Yoko Taro games that they regularly share the same themes. Moreover, the worlds of the NieR series and the Drakengard series are also connected.

There is lore beyond the console games as well. With NieR Reincarnation on mobile. Or all the books. And it's particularly difficult for non-Japanese fans to follow everything. We did not have direct access to the YoRHa Girls stage plays for example. Unless you speak Japanese. And while there are fan translations and summaries, it's not like everything is easily obtainable.

Are there story links between Voice of Cards and the NieR (Drakengard) universe?

Knowing Yoko taro, you might be wondering if Voice of Cards is connected to NieR and Drakengard. Especially since the card game shares the same character designer as Drakengard, Kimihiko Fujisaka.

It's not the sole intriguing point either. Voice of Cards is narrated by Hiroki Yasumoto, the seiyuu who voiced Pod 042 in NieR Automata, and Grimoire Weiss in NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… So that might not be a coincidence. (Hiroki Yasumoto is also known outside Japan for voicing Sado in Bleach. Which was one of his very first roles).

However, according to Yoko Taro himself, Voice of Cards is, probably, unrelated plot-wise to his past games. In the interview from Famitsu, Yoko Taro was asked if he included links to NieR and Drakengard in the story of Voice of Cards. Yoko Taro answered: "I don't think I included any. Maybe I did but forgot though. so I'm not sure".

Yoko Taro shared a similar answer in another interview with Dengeki Online.

Keep in mind this is from the usual magazine leaks. We might be back with more details once Famitsu magazine is officially available. Voices of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars releases on October 28 on PS4 and Switch.
