Press Play has announced their upcoming game, Kalimba, will release digitally for Xbox One and PC. Originally under the codename Project Totem, Kalimba is a platformer with single-player and couch co-op modes (where each player controls two characters).

Players take control of animated totems on a journey to overthrow an evil shaman and reclaim the island of Kalimba and return it to the hands of the rightful Kalimbi people.

The game was originally conceived during the final development stages of Press Play’s Max: The Curse of Brotherhood, as Creative Director Asger Strandby explains,

My brother and I needed a creative outlet, so we started working on a small side-project in our spare time. Finding and fixing bugs all day long can be tiring, so working on something fresh on the side gave us a chance to be creative and test out new ideas.

After receiving an enthusiastic reaction at PAX and GDC this year, player feedback was incorporated into the final version of the game.

The game takes place on multiple levels across three different worlds, and features a unique triangular art style.

As players move through the game they build a totem pole piece by piece. The carvings and decorations on each piece reflect how well players have done on each level, creating a visual representation of the leaderboard.

Kalimba will be available on Xbox One on December 17th  for $9.99. A PC version will release in January 2015.
