Famitsu announced today that Kenichiro Takaki will be resigning from Marvelous Entertainment. Takaki is known as the director of Honey Parade games, the studio internal to Marvelous in charge of the Senran Kagura series. Kenichiro Takaki also announced a new game + anime multimedia project with Cygames.

Takaki made his decision known through an interview in this week’s Famitsu magazine and explained his reasons. The magazine isn’t out yet but some leaks are available.

According to the leaked information, Kenichiro Takaki cited the stricter regulations on sexual content in games as the main factor behind his resign. Despite resigning, Takaki will finish all his ongoing projects, including PS4 exclusive Senran Kagura 7EVEN: Shoujo tachi no Koufuku. In another interview a few weeks ago, Kenichiro Takaki stated that the game will be very different than what he initially had in mind. In this new interview, however, he mentioned that Senran Kagura 7EVEN will have the same foundation as usual, but with some evolved parts. Nevertheless, it’ll include more erotic comedy than ever before. He said that the game will still take a while to release, but it’ll definitely release and satisfy the fans of the series. He’s not sure whether he’ll be the one himself to complete Senran Kagura 7EVEN‘s development or not, but he’ll keep cooperating with Marvelous, and how the company will, later on, alter or censor the game if needed. Meanwhile, he’ll keep working as a “breast producer” on a new project.

Takaki announced and slightly detailed his new multimedia project with Cygames. The game and anime will include original characters designs by Hanaharu Naruko, the original character designer of Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet. The anime will be directed by Hiraku Kaneko, who directed multiple sexual fanservice heavy anime in the past such as Manyuu Hikenchou or The Qwaser of Stigmata. Kaneko also already worked with Takaki as he directed the anime of Marvelous’ Valkyrie Drive, another multimedia project.

Kenichiro Takaki’s new project will be published by Marvelous and is unrelated to the Senran Kagura franchise. The project’s development has started 18 months ago, in September 2017. According to Takaki, the project will be something quite original, with a concept based around cute girls who “can’t get stripped”, and will include hot-blooded fights. Takaki wants it to be so good that people who think he can only do sexual fanservice with nothing worthwhile behind will be surprised.

Why Ratchet & Clank is the Most Important PS5 Game

Personally speaking, I think there are multiple reasons behind this decision rather than being purely the fault of stricter censorship stances, and how it might be because of reasons we’ll probably never know, similar to Hajime Tabata resigning from Square Enix. It’s not like there are no games with heavy sexual fanservice releasing any more, be it on Sony consoles or other platforms, and it’d be a huge mistake to think otherwise, or that every single one of these games gets censored. The situation isn’t as dire as what it seems when reading Kenichiro Takaki’s latest interviews. But well, like with Tabata we’ll never have the whole story anyway.

It’s also certain that this decision was taken very recently as in the previous interview I translated, Takaki teased that he’d do more Senran Kagura games on Switch. Unless these games are part of the projects he’ll finish before leaving.

I’ll be reading the whole interview when Famitsu magazine releases and this story should be updated if I find anything else interesting.
