Kinect Hack: You Are the Minecraft

By Danl Haas

January 10, 2011

Finally, a Kinect story that features something I actually care about! I didn’t think they could do it. Some incredibly clever programmers led by Nathan Viniconis have figured out some kind of magical process that takes the depth images captured by the Kinect’s camera, reconstructs that image in three dimensions using Minecraft blocks. You can actually read up on the entire process here, but if you’re not in the mood to read lots of bullet points and raw code, you can skip right to their results gallery. It’s pretty remarkable stuff; they’ve even managed to make the ouput try to mimic the colors of the original image using Minecraft blocks. It definitely puts the sprite art that dominates most servers to shame.
