Tetsuya Nomura teases more Kingdom Hearts for the 20th anniversary in 2022

Tetsuya Nomura: “Sora has been picked as the final fighter of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Ever since it was decided and we got the invitation, I regularly supervised Sora’s inclusion and I’ve seen how meticulous the developers are. I’m sure you’ll all be satisfied. I can’t thank Mr. Sakurai and his staff enough.”

Tetsuya Nomura: “Thanks to everyone’s support, Kingdom Hearts will celebrate its 20th anniversary on March 2022. We’ve prepared a trailer for the occasion, which teases some of the celebrations coming. Please wait for more information regarding each of the news in the trailer. We’re also planning several things not shown in this trailer. Look forward to it.”

The two source tweets with Tetsuya Nomura’s message are included below.

New Kingdom Hearts merch and 20th-anniversary event

The trailer most notably announced a special Kingdom Hearts 20th-anniversary event is coming. We don’t know when, and whether this will be an IRL event or a live stream. Additional details will be revealed at a later date by Square Enix.

Back on June 16, 2020, Tetsuya Nomura shared a new trailer teasing the “2nd phase of the Kingdom Hearts series”, teasing at least two new projects.

Later on in September 2020, in interviews from Japanese outlets and translated by yours truly, director Nomura teased developments for 2022.

Lastly, on November 18, through Japanese outlet Dengeki Online, Tetsuya Nomura again reiterated more projects are being prepared for the 20th anniversary in 2022. That was right after the launch of Kingdom Hearts Meldody of Memory.

Sora will be launching in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on October 18, for $6 USD. You can always reach me on Twitter to chat about anime or niche Japanese games @A_Iyane07.
