Since the start of the series, every numbered Kingdom Hearts entry has always kicked off with a fast-paced opening sequence that is always backed by music from Utada Hikaru. The latest entry in the franchise, this week’s release of Kingdom Hearts III is no different, and this time opens the game with the new track Face My Fears. The only difference though is that this time, Face My Fears was born through a collaboration between both Hikaru and EDM musician Skrillex.

In a recent conversation with The Verge, Skrillex–whose real name is Sonny Moore–explained how Face My Fears came to be in the first place. Skrillex, who says he is a massive fan of the Kingdom Hearts series, met Hikaru back in 2013 at a music festival in Germany. The two quickly became friends and a few years later, Hikaru told Skrillex that she was again working on the theme song for Kingdom Hearts III, which at the time was Don’t Think Twice. She sent the song over to him suggesting that he do a remix of the track, but Skrillex had trouble figuring out what to do with the song. “I would put it in, and load it up in my Ableton Live, where I produce music, and I didn’t really know what to do with it. It was really hard to touch because I just liked it how it was,” Skrillex said.

Plans for working together halted until last summer when both Hikaru and Skrillex happened to be in London at the same time. This is when Skrillex had the idea to just write an entirely new song for Kingdom Hearts III instead. “I started with these piano chords, and we wrote it in about an hour,” explained Skrillex of Face My Fears. “I’m really sensitive to the game, you know, and wanted to do it justice. I was really happy with the result.” The final product of Face My Fears was then done for an entire year before it ever was released.

As for whether or not Skrillex has been able to play KH3 for himself yet, he said that Square still hadn’t sent him a copy of the game. He also acknowledged that he’s only played the first two games in the series, which make me think he’s going to be very, very lost once he finally does jump in.

Kingdom Hearts III is out now on PS4 and Xbox One. You can check out Face My Fears down below if you haven’t heard the track yet.
