The keyblade is one of the more iconic aspects of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, which  will see its newest console iteration in the form of Kingdom Hearts III since 2005's Kingdom Hearts II. It has been revealed that the keyblade will be able to undergo a variety of transformations in the upcoming title - some of which were briefly featured in the trailer - which will eventually cause it to transcend its identity as simply a weapon or tool.

“In the trailer, we saw it transform into the shape of a gun, but there are also some other unbelievable transformations...The other day, when we were checking it out, the staff member said ‘it turns into ____’ and I impulsively replied with, ‘Are you serious?’” Game Director Tetsuya Nomura told Famitsu (translated by Siliconera), "According to suggestions from the planning side, it’ll likely be used as some sort of gimmick. The Keyblade has infinite possibilies."

Kingdom Hearts III is being developed and will be published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The story will take place after the events of the Nintendo 3DS' Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.
