Kingdoms of the Dump Gets a Charming New Trailer For Kickstarter Launch

Kingdoms of the Dump by Roach Games is a throwback to the heyday of SNES RPGs. It mixes nostalgia and charm into an attractive package.

Kingdoms of the Dump is an enchanting throwback to classic SNES turn-based RPGs. The game just launched on Kickstarter a few days ago and, to celebrate, developer Roach Games has released a new trailer. Watch it below.

In Kingdoms of the Dump, you play as Dustin Binley, disgraced trash can squire. He is trying to save the King of Garbagia and clear his good name. Joining you on your quest are various inhabitants of the Land of Fill.

The trailer shows off a number of different aspects of the game. You see some of the characters traversal abilities in action, along with a few glimpses of the grid-based combat. This style of combat makes positioning important and the developers have said they’ll be implementing timed hits to give you more control of each fight.

You also get to see the Mode-7-inspired world map as the party travels by zeppelin. It’s a cool visual that expertly harkens back to the SNES heyday. The music does a great job of invoking that era as well, and I’m very hopeful that the team meets their first stretch goal. That will allow them to get a special guest track from Hiroki Kikuta, the composer behind Secret of Mana.

Observant viewers might also notice the game has no random battles, something that I’m personally very happy with. I’ve always been more taken with games like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger than Final Fantasy because of random encounters, so this is a welcome feature.

Kingdoms of the Dump is still a ways out. In the best-case scenario, it will be out on Linux, Mac, and PC in 2022. If it’s something you’re interested in supporting, go check it out on Kickstarter. Stay with DualShockers for all your indie news.
