Kiryu Coco graduation – Why is she leaving Hololive?

In the 12 minutes long video, Kiryu Coco explained she will be graduating and leaving Hololive, and stop her activities on July 1 with a final stream.

As for why she’s graduating, Kiryu Coco simply said while feeling apologetic: “There are too many things I can’t tell you about why I’m graduating, so I simply won’t say anything at all, but I know it’s not satisfying to not hear a reason”.

Kiryu Coco’s channel membership and members-only content will continue to be available for three months after her graduation. So it seems her channel will be closed in October 2021. Moreover, fans are able to send in presents, see Hololive’s official announcement for the details.

Who is Hololive VTuber Kiryu Coco?

Kiryu Coco is one of the most popular VTubers of Cover and Hololive. Most notably because she is a bilingual (English / Japanese) VTuber. Coco made her debut in December 2019, and is nicknamed Kaichou / Chairman because of how she highly values honor and justice and as a reference to yakuza hierarchy. One of her favorite character is in fact Kiryu from the Yakuza series.

She reached over 100,000 subscribers in one month on YouTube, and on February 17, 2021, she had surpassed 1 million subscribers.

Kiryu Coco was most notably known for her Reddit shitpost reviews, where she’d read dumb posts and montages on Reddit, interacting with the VTuber community there, most of the time with another VTuber as guest, such as Calliope Mori.

Hololive is one of the biggest VTuber agencies thanks to how quick it was to introduce English VTubers for a broader audience. And thanks to some of its poster personalities like Kiryu Coco, who was there for the English audience before Hololive English started.

The first members of Hololive English were revealed in September 2020. The 1st generation included Watson Amelia, Ninomae Ina’nis, Takanashi Kiara, Mori Calliope, and Gawr Gura. Meanwhile, Kiryu Coco was speaking in both Japanese and English in her streams since 2019.

Later on, Hololive also launched an Hololive Indonesia, Korea, and India as well. Indonesia in particular has always had many anime fans, and is along with Japan and China one of the biggest receptive countries towards VTubers.

And yet, despite Hololive’s powerful position in the VTuber world, the departure of Kiryu Coco will definitely impact the company.

Personally speaking, I’d say it’s possible the real person behind Coco could come back to the entertainment industry in some form, perhaps as an independent VTuber through a new character. In any case, I wish her all the best.
