Konami Pulls Back the Curtain on Upcoming TurboGrafx-16 Mini

The TurboGrafx-16 Mini is the latest mini console from Konami. The game lineup currently includes R-Type, Super Star Soldier, Ys Book I & II, and more.

The mini came console craze took the world by storm when Nintendo released the NES Classic in 2016. Since then, we’ve seen a number of companies release their own mini consoles to try and compete. Konami has decided to throw their hat into the ring and has announced the TurboGrafx-16 Mini. Take a first look at the tiny console in the trailer below.

The TurboGrafx-16 first released in Japan in 1987 as the PC Engine before coming to North America in 1989. The console wasn’t very successful in the States, but quickly became a major hit in Japan. The console was known for excellent third-party support and getting at least 17 different model revisions.

The mini console will take everything players loved about the TurboGrafx and shrink it down. The console will also feature a quick save function that lets you save your progress and pick up where you left off when you eventually put the console down. It also supports up to five-player local co-op with a separately sold multitap.

Of course, the reason you’re here is to get the game lineup. Konami is keeping the full lineup secret for now, but we do know six of the games coming to the North American version:

  • R-Type
  • New Adventure Island
  • Ninja Spirit
  • Ys Book I & II
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • Alien Crush

The Japanese version keeps Ys I & II and Dungeon Explorer but replaces almost everything else. They will have access to these games:

  • Bonk’s Adventure
  • Dracula X
  • The Kung Fu/China Warrior
  • Super Star Soldier

This is a cool surprise announcement to get at E3. I’ll be interested to see what other games they add before release. Pricing and release details for the TurboGrafx-16 were not announced, but I would expect more news soon. Check out DualShockers for all your E3 news.
