Kotaku UK Closes its Doors as Licensing Rights Expire

Kotaku UK says 'goodbye' after six years of game reporting, following the publisher's refusal to renew a licensing agreement with G/O Media.

In a news article this morning, Kotaku UK editor-in-chief Rich Stanton announced the end of the international gaming website. The United Kingdom localized version of Kotaku is closing its doors after six years of news, reviews, and good old fashion reporting. The news comes because Future Publishing, Kotaku UK’s parent company, decided not to renew its license for the Kotaku brand from G/O Media.

As Stanton points out in his post, gaming has changed a lot since the website was created back in 2014. He adds, however, “sadly we won’t be around to guide you through them.” Additionally, he clarifies that while this is the end for the current staff of the site, it’s “not necessarily the end for a localised version of Kotaku” as the rights go back to G/O Media and they can license them out again if they so choose. So this may not be the last we see of Kotaku UK.

Stanton ends his article by thanking the staff he worked with and Kotaku UK’s readership. He says in his last paragraph:

“Finally I’d like to thank and say farewell to our readers. My sense was always that you love games, have a sense of humour, and value good writing: that’s what we always tried to deliver. I’m sorry to say goodbye. Hope you all enjoyed the ride, and please take one thing forward from Kotaku UK: see games differently.”

While Kotaku UK might be shutting down, Kotaku AUS, the Australian localized version of the site, and Kotaku US are still up and running. Both sites have posted articles responding to the news and saying goodbye to their sister-site. You can find them here and here, respectively.
