Last Minute Nintendo Gift Guide for Christmas 2021
Find just the right gift for that Nintendo fan out there!
Christmas is almost here and that means having to come up with last-minute gifts, which is why we have come up with an eleventh-hour Nintendo gift guide for Christmas 2021.
For this list, we have tried to come up with a wide range of different items that you can get for those Nintendo fans on your shopping list.
In fact, we have even included some gift ideas that won’t arrive by Christmas but are worth ordering and telling your gift recipient that it is on the way.

Nintendo Switch Consoles
This is, unfortunately, going to be one of the most difficult items to obtain on this list, especially this close to Christmas. The Nintendo Switch has become harder and harder to get during the pandemic, with even the readily available last year Nintendo Switch Lite being hard to find now.
There are three versions of the Nintendo Switch out there to choose from now, including the new Nintendo Switch OLED model, the regular Nintendo Switch, and the Nintendo Switch Lite.
When it comes to trying to find one before Christmas, you are going to have to get lucky with your local stores around you. For instance, my local Best Buy currently shows one Nintendo Switch Lite being in stock and that is all. I would recommend checking your local Best Buy, Target, Walmart, GameStop, and any other local or regional stores that may carry them as well when you are looking for one.
If you want to try to order online for it to arrive after Christmas, GameStop currently has the previously hard to find Nintendo Switch Animal Crossing: New Horizons Edition that you can order from their website.
Besides that, you’re just going to have to get lucky in-store or online with Nintendo Switch systems in time for Christmas.
Nintendo Switch Games
There are too many games to list to give a full breakdown of all of the Nintendo Switch games that are worth picking up as gifts for Nintendo Switch. For that reason, we will provide a list of staples for the system and then the biggest releases from 2021 that were released for the system.
As for the Nintendo Switch staples that everyone should own, those include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Maker 2, Luigi’s Mansion 3, Splatoon 2, Ring Fit Adventure, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and Pokemon Sword and Shield. There are plenty of other games we could have listed here, but we didn’t want the list to go on forever.
As for Nintendo Switch games that released in 2021, games such as Metroid Dread, Monster Hunter Rise, New Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, Mario Party Superstars, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, Shin Megami Tensei V, and No More Heroes 3 are great options for gifts this holiday season.
The Nintendo Switch is also a fantastic system for indie games, which it is certainly full of as well. These won’t be as simple as purchasing a physical copy a lot of the time, as the physical releases are usually limited runs, but these are good ideas you can recommend someone after buying them an eShop gift card.
Some of the best indies on Nintendo Switch to check out are Hades, Untitled Goose Game, Axiom Verge 1 and 2, Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, The Messenger, Spiritfarer, Death’s Door, Celeste, Streets of Rage 4, Overcooked! 2, Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, Stardew Valley, Undertale, and the two Ori games among many others.
Nintendo Switch Accessories
As the Nintendo Switch has been out for almost five years now, there are countless accessories on the market that you could pick up for the system. However, there are still some accessories that are must-haves that we have compiled for this guide.
First of all, Joy-Con Controllers and the Pro Controller are must-haves for the Nintendo Switch. Extra Joy-Con controllers are vital for multiplayer games and the Pro Controller is really the best overall way to experience the system. While there really aren’t worthwhile third-party Joy-Cons to get, there are decent third party variations of the Pro Controller from PowerA.
When it comes to playing Super Mario Bros. Ultimate, some players prefer using the GameCube controller instead. There are some versions that are just USB controllers, but many people prefer using the traditional GameCube controllers, which will require a GameCube Controller Adapter. The first party version that was around for Wii U is not readily available now, so you should instead just look for the Mayflash GameCube Controller Adapter instead.
From there, accessories such as cases for your console and screen protectors are very wise purchases to go along with a new Nintendo Switch that you have purchased. Someone that already has the system likely already has these though, so they may not be as worth looking for.
Retro Nintendo Systems and Accessories
The NES Classic and SNES Classic would have easily been on this list a few years ago, but they are just way too expensive to get from a third party seller these days, unfortunately. The good news is that people can play a lot of these games on the Nintendo Switch Online service at this point, though some games are missing.
As for playing retro Nintendo games, some of the best options out there like the Analogue NT Mini for NES and Analogue Super NT aren’t really able to be found any more at a good price. This is why you will probably be better off looking at Hyperkin’s Retron consoles if the person you are buying for does not already have the systems. The only downside with those systems is that the video and audio quality isn’t always the best.
We’d like to include the Analogue Pocket on this list, which is the new best way to play Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games. However, those getting it now pre-ordered it a while ago and pre-ordering it now has an estimated arrival date of 2023, which is too far to be ordered for Christmas this year.
While there have been clone consoles for the older systems, the Nintendo 64 and GameCube have not been so lucky. Thankfully, EON has come up with a few adapters that are very effective at bringing both consoles to modern televisions.
As long as the person you are buying for already has a Nintendo 64 or Nintendo GameCube, you can purchase the EON Super 64 adapter or EON GCHD MK-II adapter. These plug right into the back of either console and let you connect to your modern television with an HDMI cable, which can be done with ease due to the simplicity of the adapters.
While they are pretty pricy, they are very worth it for the lack of lag that much cheaper HDMI adapters for said consoles struggle mightily with. These are also things that aren’t as prevalent, so it would be a very nice surprise for someone as a Christmas gift.
That is it for our last minute Nintendo Gift Guide for Christmas 2021. We hope you were able to get some good ideas here to pick up in stores or order for a later arrival and have a very Merry Christmas.
