Following a small snippet of concept art, the League of Legends VGU team has provided new details on Skarner's rework, which will seemingly change the champion's visual and gameplay in many ways. As voted by the community in 2022, the crystal scorpion will also receive a new look in the near future.

The VGU team said the update will bring changes to Skarner's narrative, art, and gameplay, something players have been crying out for quite some time. The team also provided information about what direction they're taking the champion in and the problems they have been running into in recent months.

According to the VGU team, they aim to build a consistent story while making Skarner visually appealing like previously-reworked characters, including Akali, Katarina, and Swain. "We always knew that Skarner would be a challenging and large rework, but he is admittedly a bit more challenging than we had anticipated." the VGU team said in the developer update.

On top of that, the team knew that Skarner needed a big revamp to make sure they don't fall into some of the same pitfalls. Skarner has the lowest breath and depth out of all champions, meaning it requires a great effort to help Skarner gain popularity among players. The champion's deep connection with elemental magic is the key to its rework, making Skarner more intelligent while maintaining its immense power.

"We decided to amplify his good/lawful character archetype and scorpion fantasy, completely omitting his crystal theme. This allowed us to explore different power fantasies in the Runeterran universe, from Voidspawn to Hextech-empowered" the VGU team elaborated on Skarner's rework with thematic details.

Most notably, Skarner's ultimate is now AoE, which will give the champion a serious team fights initiation threat against crowded enemies. "The rest of Skarner’s kit will help him get into a strategic position to use Impale and give him some additional things to do when Impale is active." The developer team teased the rest of Skarner's skills. It appears that the champion's skill set will work in sync to compensate for some reliability it has lost due to changes to its ultimate. Riot Games also revealed that Rell's and Neeko's mid-scope are getting close.

Udyr, Shyvana, and Orianna will receive new skins while the quick-play mode is now around the corner from releasing. Riot is currently testing out the much-requested mode as a replacement for blind pick in select regions. It will allow players to choose role and champion combinations when they queue.
