Publisher Athlon Games, which makes games for PC and console and the new publishing division of Leyou Technologies, announced today that they have has signed a long-term licensing agreement with Middle-earth Enterprises to develop and publish a video game based on The Lord of the Rings.
Dave Miller, president at Athlon Games provided a comment in a press release:
“It’s a singular opportunity to work closely with Middle-earth Enterprises to create a completely new experience for fans of the landmark fantasy work of J.R.R. Tolkien, and we are excited about the resurgence of interest in The Lord of the Rings IP,”
“This, along with several other major properties Athlon is working with, will help us to further our goal of creating AAA cooperative console and PC experiences that gamers will want to play for years to come.”
Although the press release touched on consoles, they didn’t delve further on what The Lord of the Rings would come out on, but I think it’s safe to assume that PS4 and Xbox One will get some hobbit action, maybe on the PS5?. This will be the second The Lord of the Rings online game with The Lord of the Rings Online launching in 2007, with the game’s license being renewed, and still on-going to this day.
This exciting news comes after Amazon Studios announced they would be developing a new The Lord of the Rings TV series, which apparently is costing around $1 billion dollars across multiple seasons. Very interesting times lay ahead for The Lord of the Rings, which is not only an exceptional book but also movie and I think we can all wait in hope that Athlon Games will do it justice.
