Lord of the Rings MMORPG to be Co-Developed by Amazon Game Studios
Amazon Game Studios' next game will be an MMORPG based on the Lord of the Rings franchise from the developers working on New World.
Last September, we learned that an MMORPG based on the Lord of the Rings franchise was revealed to be in the works over at Athlon Games, a subsidiary of Leyou Technologies. While any involvement from other studios was undisclosed at that time, Amazon Game Studios revealed today that they are leading the development of the still unnamed MMORPG based on Lord of the Rings.
This partnership does make sense as Amazon is developing a Lord of the Rings TV show, though the game is said to be disconnected. The team that is working on the MMORPG, which is also said to be free-to-play, is the same one currently creating New World over at Amazon. This crew apparently consists of developers that have worked on titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny, Planetside, and Everquest, and this new game giving them the “tremendous opportunity to play and create” according to Christoph Hartmann, VP of Amazon Game Studios.
When it comes to PC and console gaming, Amazon Game Studios is fairly new. They announced Breakaway, Crucible, and New World back in 2016, but none of those games have released; in fact, Breakaway was even cancelled and Amazon Game Studios recently laid off developers during E3. The only title for PC and consoles released by Amazon Games Studios so far is The Grand Tour Game, so it will be interesting to see to see how this MMO fans out.
Amazon Game Studios and Athlon Games are currently working on a free-to-play Lord of the Rings MMO for PC and undisclosed consoles, and DualShockers will be sure to let you know once more about the game is revealed.
