Netflix announced today that an animated series based on the Magic the Gathering card game is in the works. To get fans of the game more excited is knowing that the show is being created in part by Anthony and Joe Russo. The Russo Brothers are known for making great television shows and movies, and they were executive producers for the sitcom Community. On top of that, they were directors for four different Marvel Cinematic Universe movies including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. They will be working in an executive producer capacity overseeing the show's storyline.“We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” said the Russos as to why they decided to help make this show a reality.

The announcement came with an image of the popular Planeswalker Chandra which could give fans the idea that the show will focus on the Planeswalkers, the main recurring characters in the game. The card game has a heap ton of lore that could be utilized, so it will be interesting to see where the show could lead viewers. The show could also introduce new players to the game as well.

This is the first time that Magic the Gathering will be adapted for either film or television. The show will be run by Henry Gilroy, one of the writers of Star Wars Rebels and Jose Molina, who was an executive producer on The Tick and Marvel's Agent Carter, all of which are shows that were seen positively by both critics and audiences.

The animation will be done by Octopie Network and Bardel Entertainment Studio, who has credibility for animating numerous popular shows and movies like Rick and Morty, Teen Titans GO!, Bob's Burgers, and Space Jam.

This is not the first time a game of this sort has been announced to get an animated adaptation. Dragon's Dogma was said to be receiving an anime adaption back in March of this year.

There is currently no release window for the show at this time, so do not expect it to come anytime soon. It does seem, however, that the creators seem dedicated to making the show something that viewers will remember.
