Publisher Perfect World Entertainment and developer Cryptic Studios have announced that a new RPG based on Wizards of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering universe is currently in development for PC and console.

Magic: The Gathering is considered to be one of the most popular strategy card games in the world. The card game allows players to assume the roles of Planeswalkers, powerful mages with the ability to travel between planes of existence, summon strange creatures, and cast powerful spells. In addition to that, the narrative surrounding the card game has continued to develop and evolve over the course of Magic: The Gathering’s long lifespan. This new game has a lot of potential content to draw from in order to establish its central plot and the characters that will lead it, a point that does not seem to be lost on Perfect World Entertainment’s CEO Bryan Huang.

“It’s Magic: The Gathering like you’ve never experienced before. We are ecstatic about the direction of the game Cryptic has been shaping. It’s always been a dream of ours to bring Magic’s Planeswalkers to a modern RPG.”

This project also marks the continuation of a licensing partnership between Perfect World Entertainment, Cryptic Studios, and Wizards of the Coast. This relationship has so far resulted in the development and continued support of the Dungeons & Dragons-based MMORPG Neverwinter, which now boasts over 15 million players.

Being called a ‘AAA’ game, the RPG does not yet have an official title or many more details for us to go on at this time. However, it seems that Cryptic Studios is up to the challenge of pleasing many the many Magic fans out there.

“Everything from the graphics to the gameplay is being targeted for a truly unique AAA game. We’re thrilled to provide Magic fans with an opportunity to explore the game’s worlds and characters through an entirely new lens. Get ready to embark on a brand new journey.”
